Powis Castle's Ghosts, Wales

The ghostly figure of an unidentified man has been seen on several occasions in one of the rooms on the ground floor. There is also the reports of a man seen riding a phantom horse within the grounds and a women dressed in white flowing gowns appears in one of the bedrooms.

The most famous story from this castle is the ghost of a gentleman that was seen more than once by a seamstress staying in one of the rooms. The seamstress, an elderly woman, was invited to stay on at the castle while working on several repair jobs. On one particular night, as she prepared for bed she read, as she was accustomed, a few verses from her Bible. Suddenly she became aware of a gentleman walking into the room and across to a window and gazing out into the darkness. After a short while he turned and left the room and slowly shut the door behind him. The seamstress a little afraid and worried suddenly realised that the gentleman she had just seen had made no sound. Now more scared and clasping the good book she knelt down by her bed and began to pray. Once more the door to the bedroom opened and the gentleman reappeared close behind her before he turned towards the door and left once more. The elderly seamstress scared and alone tried to sleep during the night but her peace was interrupted for a third time by the gentleman. This time she plucked up the courage to ask him what he wanted from her. The ghostly figure gestured for her to follow him and hesitantly she did so. She followed him along the passage way to a small room and he told her to lift the floor boards were she would find a box that she was to send to the Earl of Powys in London.

The box was sent and received by the Earl who was delighted at its contents. So much so that he offered the seamstress a place to stay at the castle for the rest of her life as his guest. As to the ghostly figure of the gentleman, he was never seen again.
