While it would be difficult not to have come across or heard about ‘orbs’
with the many photographs that now circulate the internet it may be more
interesting to know that there is nothing new about encounters with strange
light anomalies or ghost lights In fact they have been reported throughout
history and still are by many people from around the world.
Throughout
history there have been tales of the marshlands being haunted by strange
glowing creatures of the night. The areas of once untamed marshland around
the Fen country of England were once a place feared by those who attempted
to cross its pathways during the hours of darkness. The wind would whisper
through the ancient reed beds and thickets of alder and willow trees, the
firm ground would have often have been hard to distinguish from the swamp
that lay in wait for its next victim.
Many a lone unwary traveller would never have been seen or heard of again
after attempting to cross the marshlands. One wrong step would have them
sucked down into the bottomless dark mud as they gasped for their final breath
of air.
Ghostly flickering lights where often seen by locals and travellers at night
known to the locals as Jack of lanterns, Will o the wisp or Jenny burnt
ashes that would lead those that where good of heart to safety over the
marshes and those of a dark heart would be lead deeper into the marshes
to meet their untimely death.
Folklore
tells us of these strange marsh lights as being evil creatures with lanterns
on their backs or fairy lantern bearers. It was once said that to whistle
whilst crossing theses lands at night would most surely conjure up these
glowing creatures. The only way to hold of an attack by these creatures
was to lie face down, hold your breath and hope upon hope that they would
leave you alone.
Even in today’s modern society were many of the marshes have been drained
and reclaimed we hear stories of encounters with strange light anomalies
as these testimonies explain :
“No one wanted to go around the church so we decided to go in a group
of four; there were two in front with two behind. As we rounded the church
to the main entrance there were four luminous green orbs the size of
footballs about 12” off the ground in exactly the same position as we
were standing.”
“I had returned home from work late one evening and was unlocking
the back door when something made me look up. Not sure why I felt compelled
to look up at the time but when I did I noticed a ball of light about
a couple of feet in diameter just above the roof top. It moved in a silent
motion away from the house and across the night sky and out of view behind
some trees.”
I have myself been on many vigils at haunted locations and witnessed odd
light anomalies. Other witnesses of a haunting have reported seeing lights
in a corner of a room that they are unable to explain. Such light anomalies
are world wide with reports from America in 1984 of weird red and yellow
lights that appear over the brown mountains in North Carolina and the disused
cemetery in the west mountain valley of Colorado that have appeared nightly
over certain graves for over one hundred years.
